Stuff

George Carlin’s rant about “stuff” is pee-in-your-pants funny.  I had a storage unit once. The kids and I moved to Florida and moved in with my folks for a couple of years while I sold a house and found a house I could afford to buy. Why I thought it was a good idea to put stuff in a storage unit for 2 plus years is beyond me.  By the time we emptied the storage unit, other than the kitchen stuff, everything else was yucky moldy and buggy. Not reclaimable. And really, if we hadn’t seen it in three years then we clearly didn’t need it. What was I thinking?

Well now, we personally, don’t have much stuff. Which is exactly how we like it.

Hank lived in Genie, the adventure van, with Luna for a couple of years prior to finding us in Floyd.  There’s not much room for carrying extras in Genie and Hanks focus was toys, big people adventure kinda toys. Mountain bike. Kiteboard. Skateboard. Surfboard. Rock Climbing Crash Pad.  You get the picture. Usefull stuff.

Mud and I moved to Floyd 2½ years ago. We ruthlessly sorted everything we packed, goodwillling, freecycling and friending off goods.  We gave away all kinds of things including a washer and most of our furniture, keeping only the family antiques. It felt good to pare down our stuff and find folks that could use what we didn’t or weren’t going to need. Our biggest offender of unnecessary stuff is art supplies. Mud has painting and pottery and mailing, I have fabric and fiber. Still, we managed to fill up the largest U-Haul truck they rent, a 26 foot cavern, floor to ceiling Tetris style. The bulk of that was RAGGEDedge Gear leaving a little room for our bikes, a few tubs of clothes and our kitchen. Literally.

We find ourselves getting ready for another move. It’s still kinda up in the air where we’re going but we’ve given notice and will be leaving this awesome house by Dec 31st.  In 2 ½ years of living here, we’ve accumulated a bit more stuff but most of it seems to be garage, garden or chicken related.  All things we’re going to need. We’re still ruthlessly sorting again as it’s good to reevaluate the stuff we accumulated. There’s no freecycle option but the magic of Floyd seems to be working as we’ve found a home for the dryer, a giant tub of washed recycled sails, and packing peanuts. While there’s more stuff to find homes for, it’ll be awesome that some of our stuff will soon be someone else’s stuff.

(Another post by Suze! This is number 2!! Give her a warm welcome to the Hawk-Mo Hotwire folks.)

About mudly

Mud is main blog writer extraordinaire, picture guru, and the garden and adventure instigator. She loves to cook, but doesn’t much like following a recipe. She also loves typewriters, the color turquoise, and wearing tie dye with stripes. And she dorks out on permies.com while dreaming up and planning her next garden.
